We Are Harboring Murderers!
Posted by Kate on Sunday, November 14, 2004You probably think I am talking about our cats. You would be wrong. Our cats are essentially pacifists. They can barely even kill bugs.
It is the red claw crabs. They have killed off our friendly, sweet, little fiddler crabs. The murderous red claw crabs always hide out in their little mountain cave, while the fiddler crabs used to climb on top of everything and sometimes wave frantically and sometimes just meditate. Even when I was cleaning the tank, the fiddlers would just hang out on top of the mountain or the filter. Apparently they must have been afraid to go in the water. And the waving, was them saying, "please HELP us, the red claws are cannibals C-A-N-N-I-B-A-L-S! Save us!!"
So now we have two murderous crabs, who hide most of the time, so the tank looks empty.
This is my luck with aquariums. It seems I always have at least one aggressive fish bully, who kills off all my other aquatic pets. Then not only am I sad about fish/crab death, I am stuck taking care of the murderer into old age AND I can't get any other crabs/fish because they would just be food, for the murderous bully.
And so maybe you are thinking I should just take care of the bully with a fun-filled trip to porcelain swirling aquarium that we keep in the bathroom. Well I would feel too guilty. I guess I am just as much of a pacifist as our cats.
