Maya
Posted by Patrick on Monday, November 08, 2004I just turned in my registration for a class at RISD (Rhodey School of Design). There I'll be taking a class on a 3D computer animation program called Maya. Maya has very little to do with ancient civilizations, and lots to do with cool computer created imagery and animation. Movies like Shrek, Lord of the Rings, and Spiderman 2 all used Maya. Maya's also used in video game development and automotive design.
It's software I've tried to get into before, but I think I just need the structured class assignments (and the expensive tuition - yikes!) to get me motivated. I doubt I'll be designing video games or the next Toyota Supra any time soon, but hopefully I'll learn something useful.
Chrysler Tomahawk concept. Made by someone else.
I'm excited about learning a 3D computer software program, as opposed to the 2D software associated with web and print work. My buddy Jay (who posts occasionally at Alley Central) has taken both the Maya class I'm starting up and the more advanced Maya class that would follow. He uses the software at his job! That's pretty cool. I can't think of any reason why they'd need skills like this at my job, but you never know. Maybe I'll head up some sort of 3D accident re-creation team. That would be fun. Fun and expensive.
Expensive? Yah. Looks like the company that makes it wants about $2100 bucks for the software. Luckily they have a free "Learning Edition" that allows the serfs and peasant class to animate, too.
