Sharp!
Posted by Patrick on Friday, November 12, 2004Just the other morning, I'm getting out of my car in the parking garage at work when I see a co-worker walking in. She compliments me on my car. She says it looks sharp. I return a compliment on her newish Nissan Altima. She begins talking about how her and her husband use to collect cars when they were younger. She says..
"We use to have this Pinto. It was a really sharp Pinto."
I was not at all expecting to hear the phrase "sharp Pinto" that morning. Or ever.
First, I couldn't think of what a Pinto really looked like. I kept imagining how my mom's old AMC Gremlin use to look (kind of like this), but I knew that wasn't right. I also thought that Pinto's had a tendency to blow up if they were hit just right, but I couldn't remember and didn't feel like asking a co-worker if her old car was prone to self-destruction. (A quick Google search confirms the Pinto's Hindenburg-like qualities).
So, here's a Pinto:
I wondered what would make it a sharp Pinto? Maybe some 22" Chrome rims, to add a modern feel to a classic Pinto:
But that didn't make the Pinto sharp. In fact, I doubt very much that 22" rims would fit this car at all. So, off came the wheels, and I came to the conclusion that a thick racing stripe might make a Pinto sharp:
I don't think the stripe increased the sharpness at all.
Maybe the Pinto, in the 21st century, just isn't that sharp and I shouldn't be pushing excessive sharpness upon it. Or maybe not having been alive during its glory (or perhaps blaze of glory) days, I'm unable be objective. Maybe I just need to join the PCCA
Who knows. In 30 years, maybe somebody will be blogging on how the Celica wasn't a sharp car. And they'd be wrong. So very wrong.
