Learnin'

Posted by Patrick on Sunday, October 15, 2006

Yesterday we got up early and headed into Raleigh for a little first-time-home-buyer education. We had to do attend this class to get the snazzy loan from the bank, but we were both glad to go. There's a lot to the whole home purchasing process.

Long live the Stein!

The first half of the class was all about credit and not being foolish with finances. Kate and I pretty much have that part down, but you get the vibe that not everyone in the class has an 800 score on their credit report (I chatted with another guy in class who was getting a loan after a foreclosure). The people teaching it knew their stuff, which made it quality time.

We ate lunch at a local sub shop called Roly Poly, which was overpriced but tasty. Unfortunately the entire class of almost 70 ordered their lunch from there at the same time, so many people waited almost an hour for food. We just got lucky; receiving our order right away, and this gave us some time to walk around a local downtown Raleigh market, which we had seen on a previous visit.

After lunch we went back to class and heard a real estate agent discuss the agent part of the process. She was informative and friendly, and opened our eyes to some of the crazy paperwork we signed with our agent. This has stressed us out significantly.

After the agent finished, a home inspector talked for a while. He was as knowledgeable as the other speakers, and reaffirmed out belief that home inspection, prior to purchase, is a must.

So we left the class more knowledgeable, and more concerned about our own possible purchase. Right now we're in wait-and-see mode with our agent. We may head out into the world today and check out some more houses.
