Centerfest and more

Posted by Kate on Sunday, September 17, 2006

Today Pat and I went to Centerfest in downtown Durham. We wandered around and enjoyed lots of beautiful handcrafted artwork. There was jewelry, stained glass, fused glass, fiber art, pottery, sculptures, furniture, and photography. It was super hot, walking on the black pavement, but worth it.

Happy Birthday Grace!

For dinner tonight we got free pizza. We had gotten a coupon from our apartment complex as a move-in perk. Very nice.

Friday and Saturday we spoke with a couple of banks about mortgages. Unfortunately one of the banks was acting like they had never heard of the First Time Homebuyer Rate that I had done a lot of research on. Pretty annoying. Really without the internet I would not have known that Pat and I were eligible for this rate. The rate is there to help people like us and people worse off than us.

It made me pretty mad that this bank would pretend they didn't know about this statewide program of which they are listed as a participating member. And they are advertising and pushing an interest-only loan, the most evil of loans. Sure they are in the business of making money, but they are a big international bank and it seems kind of wrong to have a whole ad campaign based on interest-only loans. I guess I wouldn't have been so annoyed by that if they had not played dumb about the special rate and then tried to talk me out of it because of all the paperwork involved.

I am willing to sign a few more documents and show three years worth of tax returns if it is going to save me thousands of dollars, how about you? When I read about predatory lending it was implied that it would be small lenders doing it, not extremely well-known, very large banks.
