Home work
Posted by Patrick on Wednesday, September 13, 2006Today is day three of me working my old job from the comfort of our new apartment here in North Carolina. They were kind enough to let me keep my job for the next few months while I search for something a bit more local.
Unlike driving to a traditional office, my commute is now literally seconds a day, which is very cool and saves me close to 40 bucks a week in gas and over an hour of time each day. I guess the only downside to this is that I pass no Dunkin Donuts on my way to the office.
Most of my job is done on a computer, using Email or the phone. I've also been using Skype to make calls and check voicemail during the day, and that's been moderately effective. While socially its kind of a drag not to be interacting with people during the day, it does allow me an almost distraction free environment. I think as long as I'm busy, I should be ok working from home.
The temptation of non-work related distractions is pretty high, with my home computer right next to my work computer. A consistent routine has been helpful so far (starting and ending work at the same times each day). I also have the advantage of having my entire music collection right at my fingertips, which is super-sweet.
