The Blockbuster movies continue to head to our place. We've watched two movies recently, one good and one strange.

DragonFirst the strange movie. We watched Bruce Lee in Enter the Dragon. The 1973 film stars Bruce Lee as some guy, who for whatever reason has to go to this island and beat some people up. There are some other people there, fighting, and a villain with a missing hand, and maybe some monkeys?

I was told that this was the martial arts film, but it was just kind of cheesy, and fairly predictable. Was this the standard of movies in 1973, or was there no way to make this movie without being a cheese-fest? Bruce Lee's skills were impressive, but I feel as though I was tainted by seeing The Matrix first. Maybe I'm being too harsh. Are there better Bruce Lee movies?

The second movie we saw was good. Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events is a film adaptation of a popular series of books, that I probably would have heard of if I read more than one or two books a year. The story focuses on three recent-orphans who struggle to find their way in the world, while dodging a Count (played by Jim Carrey). I feel as though this is a movie marketed towards children, but there's some intense violence occurring. This movie also features a vile person without a hand, but the character embraces his hook, instead of covering it with a glove.

SnickThe visuals in this movie are excellent and highly stylized. The cars are great.

The movie webite is pretty cool, and the DVD menus were cool, too. The artword reminded me of illustrator Edward Gorey.

It's probably unfair to compare these two movies, made thirty years apart. Both feature supporting characters without hands, so I felt it was ok to post about both of them together.
