Learnin' the skills to pay the bills

Posted by Patrick on Thursday, September 22, 2005

My employer was kind enough to pay the almost-six-hundred dollars necessary for me to take a class at the Rhode Island School of Design. This is the second class I've taken there (I took a class on 3-D animation earlier this year).

The class is called Digital Pre-Press Production, but I like to think of it as Stuff-I-should-have-learned-while-I-was-at-Framingham-State-but-I-was-too-busy-learning-Flash. Not that I received a sub-par education at FSC, but I sort of forgot to learn the fundamentals of print work.

The class is covering all sorts of cool things like working with CMYK color in print, talking with printing press folks, making useful PDF files, scanning images, and all sorts of cool color-correcting things in Photoshop.

In our last class, we scanned in a picture we thought might need some color adjustment and then went through the steps necessary to make it look a little nicer.

The instructor speaks really quietly, so sometimes it's hard to hear him over the noise of all the new Mac's, each with their 7 almost-always-on fans. The guy does knows his stuff, and that's all that matters. A lot of the people in the class are sort of there because they have to be (for their various major/certificate requirements), but I'm all about it. Just soakin in those smarts like a sponge.

Plus, there was talk of a field trip.
