Fresh, Crazy

Posted by Patrick on Wednesday, August 31, 2005

Yesterday I reinstalled Windows 2000 on my desktop, as it was starting to slow down a bit. Computers do not naturally slow down over time, they only become clogged with leftover files of long-uninstalled programs. A fresh install is a new lease on life for a machine a few years old. Old error messages vanish, and strange slow-downs disappear.

The penalty for reinstalling Windows is your time. Once you install it, you have to install your software again, and then all of the security updates. To get it to a usable state, I had to restart the machine 10 times. Ten! That's crazy!

Far, far crazier than that, of course, is all that's going on in the south these days. I watched some news today, and it was pretty disheartening. One hurricane has ruined or ended the lives of lots of people. They didn't do anything to deserve it, and yet nature had chosen them to receive the nasty weather.

Erin brought up an interesting point on evacuations. While many did evacuate because of the storm, many more did not. From a watching-the-news perspective, you think to yourself those that stayed behind were fools... but were they? Were they too poor to evacuate, too sick, too attached to their lives to deal with the possibility that nothing would be there for them when they moved back? What an awful position to be put in! Tragic, for sure.

What do you think?
