Those you knew, those you know.
Posted by Patrick on Wednesday, August 17, 2005After paying 21 bucks for 8 gallons of processed dinosaur juice, I was just about to pull out of the gas station when I saw a familiar face roll in. It was this kid Jon who I've known since the second grade.
We were in elementary school together, and junior high, and the same Scout Troop. I saw Jon just about every day for years during a time period called "back in the day". We attended the same Scout camp, and received our Eagle Scout awards within the same year. While he was never my best friend, we were good friends and rolled with the same group.
He went to the local technical high school, and then I went off to college, and suddenly we wouldn't see each other for months, and occasionally years.
It was strange to see him. "What's up? What's new? How's your family?" He asks. We chat, I tell him that I'm married, and it occurs to me that we really are far away from 10 years ago, since he's never met Kate, nor does he know that I'm hitched.
While we know the same people from Douglas (he knows my sister and maybe he knows MattMiller), he's probably never met the post-Douglas people I know like Pete, Scott, Erin, Jay, Dennis, or any of the other people I see semi-regularly.
Strange, but good to see him anyway. Makes me feel kind of old, though... like I've been alive long enough to have known someone for a long time and then fallen out of touch with them.
