Giant Beans
Posted by Kate on Sunday, September 11, 2005Wow, I just realized I haven't posted here since July! I have been relying on Pat to keep everyone up to date on the goings on at Rockland Ave. I am such a slacker. Of course Patrick is an excellent blogger so all is well.
Yesterday I did some major gardening work. This summer I hadn't done much with the garden other than pick the tomatoes, cucumbers, green beans, and Italian peppers. I let the weeds and slug population totally get out of control.
One time during the summer I tried pouring little cups of beer for the slugs to climb into and drown. This operation was not a success. I attracted giant slugs to my garden, a kind I had never seen before, and when pouring out the dead slugs there were none of the small kind that I see all over my plants.
While I was pulling out the grass that was infringing on the edges of my garden I was totally grossed out by the sheer number of slimy little slugs. So I went upstairs and got the salt. I am a little ashamed of what happened next.
I murdered a massive amount of them and watched them die. I am not that kind of person. Sure I will kill a spider or another bug if it invades my home, but going out into nature and killing what you find there is really not my thing. But these slugs.... I couldn't help it. They have kept my from enjoying my garden all year long.
In fact I had been avoiding my green beans, because I had to climb into slugfest to get to them. So when clearing out the garden yesterday I pulled out the green bean plants and found some enormous green beans. Zoe was delighted.
She loves green beans and will steal them right off the counter if you turn your back for a second. So I presented her with her very own giant bean harvest. She has spread them all around the house. She loves beans, what can I say? She especially loves to rub her head on them and if you throw one she meows in glee and runs after it and bats it around. She hasn't been so good with the fetching lately. I think she is trying to teach me to fetch...
Moses on the other hand, gave the beans a quick sniff and then was on to other things.
So all is well here at Rockland Ave and soon we will be celebrating our fourth year of living here on the third floor. Time really flies, doesn't it?
