Drive

Posted by Patrick on Thursday, September 15, 2005

Just spent an hour jabbing at the metal in my PC's case, trying to wedge in a new DVD burner. The case itself has three bays to hold CD and DVD drives, but only one was really set up for holding a drive, and it already had a drive in it.

I was using my Leatherman-like device to twist out the metal parts that were prohibiting the drive from sliding into the case, and a big chunk of the tool snapped right off! I was pretty horrified, this thing had been my trusty keychain tool for years. A bummer, for sure. It was perfectly sized for keychain use, and had all the tools you needed in life.

Looking back, larger sized tools were clearly called for. Undeterred by the destruction of my favorite tool, I carried on and got the drive into the computer. I put the case back together, plugged everything in, turned it on, and got an Invalid partition table error. That meant it was time to unplug everything, take the case apart and check the wires and whatnot.

As it turns out, there's only enough cable inside the case for three hard drives and one CD or DVD drive. I was really hoping to keep the second CD drive in there, but it was not meant to be. I got it all back together, and its burning a data DVD disc now, backing up all our digital camera photos (Over 4000 pics! Insane!).

I'm all about frequent backups, knowing the horror that is data loss. Every one in a while at work someone comes by and says "I thought I saved it but..." followed by "...that took me the whole day..." and the eventual realization that I cannot magically make their files come back to them. Backups are a beautiful thing.
