Hobo Fest

Posted by Kate on Wednesday, October 06, 2004

Hello All,
So I didn't know it before, but I think I love Bluegrass Music. When Pat and I went up to Lowell for the Folk Fest, we went for a walk with Jay at night and saw a band playing on the outdoor patio of a club. They were very good and we hung around and listened for a while before heading on with our walk. Then this past weekend that same band actually gave us a private concert at the Alley Formal! It turns out that some of the band members were friends of friends of the Alley dwellers. I was very excited to see them again and the music was just as great as I remembered.

The name of the band is Hot Day at the Zoo. I looked up their calendar to see if Pat and I could catch another concert anytime soon, but unfortunately the only time they are playing locally (if you consider Boston local) is the weekend after next, when Pat and I will be in Washington, D.C.

They are also playing at Hobo Fest. I didn't even ever realize such a thing existed. But it kind of makes sense that a band that plays at a hobo fest would appeal to me, as I have always thought of myself as a bit of a nomad, preferring to move from place to place as a hobo might. Growing up I spent every other weekend at my father's house, always happily packing up my stuff (10 gallon hamster cage included) for a change of venue. When I wasn't at my father's, I was always sleeping over friends' houses.

Then when I went to college and my mother sold the house I grew up in, I found myself truly living the nomad lifestyle. My trunk was full of all my stuff and I stayed the night wherever it was convenient. And I really liked it that way.

Nowadays I don't have much of an excuse to stay anyplace but Rockland Ave, although when I was taking classes in Barrington, I did get to spend the night at my grandmother's house once a week, which served the double purpose of getting to spend some important quality time with Gram as well as satisfying my nomad needs.

So I continue to rearrange all of our furniture in an attempt to change the scenery a little, which has been a bit of a compulsive habit since childhood. And I continue looking for more opportunities to move around. Of course our Rockland Ave situation is ideal for us right now. I guess I just need to spend a few nights away from home.

Interestingly enough my sister is the complete opposite of this, even refusing to go away to camp when we were growing up. Strange the way some things always stay the same. Ramble...Ramble... Ramble...
