Bloodletting Theatre
Posted by Patrick on Monday, October 04, 2004Monday brought another trip to the Red Cross donation center for some more pheresis (which I can't seem to get enough of). Extra platelets weigh you down! Purge them from your body! Plus you usually get a t-shirt or coffee mug, and some supper. I got a t-shirt, pizza, and a free smoke detector.
The whole process is crazy... blood leaves your body, is processed inside a machine, and then is returned to you. I was thinking it was kind of like bloodletting, but since the blood goes back inside, it really isn't an accurate comparison.
Like previous visits, I was shown a movie to keep my mind off the needles in each of my arms. Since I got there first (there were four other donors in the room), I got to choose the movie. I think it's probably a good idea to get there first, lest you be forced to watch a really bad movie. I ended up watching Tears of the Sun, staring Bruce Willis (who was good in The Fifth Element and The Sixth Sense and Monica Bellucci (Persephone from The Matrix movies). It was pretty good, if only slightly predictable. Well, really predictable. But it's good to keep yourself occupied with a movie during the whole process, otherwise you might move your arms, and that would be intensely painful.
Tears of the Sun: 3 out of 5 stars.
bloodletting Pheresis: 4 out of 5 stars.
