Jointers Don't Join
Posted by Kate on Saturday, September 25, 2004Hello All, So Wednesday was our first woodworking class. I was all nervous, as I always am on the first day of school. Pat was not nervous. He was sick. Unfortunately Pat has a cold (of the sore throat variety), but he soldiered on and came to class with me.
We got to use a radial arm saw, a jointer, a planer, and a large sanding machine. An interesting fact that I learned on my first night was that a "jointer" does not join things. Instead it makes one side of your piece of wood flat. The teacher seems nice. He is apparently going to put us through the same curriculum as his ninth grade class at this vocational high school. That is fine with me, since I know nothing about these machines. The workroom is very impressive. Large with lots of machines. The class has about four or five women and six guys. A couple of them looked about my age, but most seemed a little older. The other students were from all over the state, some from Barrington, Pascoag, Providence, etc.
Our first project is going to be a toolbox. Our teacher pointed out, it could also be used as a cd holder, planter, decorative holiday centerpiece, etc. So just watch out - two unsuspecting people may get them as Christmas presents. Or maybe we will have another Rockland Ave contest and give them away as prizes.... Considering most people I know are trying to get rid of their accumulated clutter we may not have any entrants in that contest! But wait - this wooden contraption we are making, could hold your clutter....
Unfortunately our class got switched to Tuesday nights instead of Wednesday and now I have to miss the yoga class that I just started going to. I went once and I really liked it. Nice people, very relaxing, free, just what I was looking for in a yoga class. So I guess in seven weeks when woodworking is over I will go back to yoga. Pat wasn't too happy about the night switch either, since he will be missing kung fu. But its only two months and I think we are really going to enjoy this new class.
Update: Apparently the teacher pronounces jointer without the t. Also he went into a big explanation about how it didn't join things, which led to my spelling confusion, but all is fixed now.
