Cleaning Lady and Cleaning Gentlemen

Posted by Kate on Tuesday, November 21, 2006

While coming up with a title I was stumped at what you would call a male maid. Janitor seems much more commercial than residential... strange how women clean homes and men clean businesses... I didn't mean to go off on this tangent. I blame the bleach fumes.

In the past few days Pat and I have cleaned five bathrooms, five bedrooms, three living rooms, two kitchens, a stairway, halls, closets. Top to bottom- vacuuming carpets, scrubbing linoleum, washing walls, doors, cupboards, refrigerators, ovens, toilets, tubs, and well you get the gist.

Our new house seemed pretty clean, but it actually needed a lot of scrubbing. They definitely did not clean the bathrooms before they moved out and the cupboards were full of crumbs. So there was lots of cleaning to do here.

And we were responsible for cleaning out our apartment with the threat that if it wasn't clean enough they would hire someone and we would foot the bill. We definitely left the place much cleaner than when we moved in. There were some stains on the carpet that were already there but I don't think were mentioned on the form that the women who originally had our lease filled out. Unfortunately if they decide that the women made those stains, Pat and I could be charged because we took over their lease and it is in our name. When we do the walk through we may have to put our feet in strategic places to cover the spots. I tried three different kinds of carpet cleaner to get them out, but they were definitely permanent.

There are still a couple things I need to clean, but for the most part we are done with the cleaning phase and into the putting things away phase. It is crazy deciding where stuff will go. I can't wait to have our furniture here.

The cats seem happy about the house. They only growled at each other once, right after we moved them here.

I have a washing machine dilemma. I cannot decide what kind to get. It seems reckless to spend a ton of money and get a front loader when you can get a top loader for half the price. My Mom absolutely loves her front loader and they are so cool, with the watching you wash your clothes and the million options, and they use much less water and are much gentler on clothes and we would possible have it for like 15 years, so shouldn't I get the washer I like best?

But half the price? That is a pretty big draw too. I mean we have sooooo many things we need to buy right now. I shouldn't be spending unnecessary hundreds of dollars on washing machines when we need a ladder, a power screw driver, a bed frame, a desk, carbon monoxide detectors, curtains, the list goes on... I totally cannot decide what to do. I put off the issue and took our clothes back to the apartment complex clothes care center last night, so that I would have stuff to pack for our trip home this weekend. Maybe there will be some crazy Thanksgiving sale that will let me justify paying a lot for a washer. Unfortunately we will be traveling during the major sale days so I don't know how that will work out.

Can't wait to see y'all this weekend!
