Sega!
Posted by Patrick on Tuesday, May 10, 2005Over the weekend Kate did some intense cleaning. Intense enough to necessitate the transfer of some of our old (and quite unused) stuff to the Salvation Army. Throwing out perfectly good stuff is wrong, but yard sales require time and talking to weirdos.
On my way home from work I dropped off the stuff... and I should have just left. But of course, I went inside to see all the stuff everyone else needed to get rid of, and I found these:
Holy crap! Sega Master System games! For fifty cents a piece, I had to get them. (Fifteen years ago they were selling for 30 bucks a piece!) You see, back in the day I had a Sega Master System video game system. There was some intense excitement when my dad brought home the Sega. What a fine piece of 8-bit machinery! This was an age when gameplay was king, and graphics were square and pixely. Games came on cartridges, and that's the way we liked it.
Everyone else in the world had a Nintendo at the time, except for my neighbor who had a Sega, and that probably influenced my desire for the Sega vs the Nintendo. After Burner was one of my favorites, but I think the neighbor jacked it from me one day. I had no proof of the theft, and my parents didn't really want me hanging out in their house because they had lots of guns and a big nazi flag in their dining room.... so I never saw it again.
Seeing the box again made me think of the hundreds of hours I wasted playing video games. Good times! Other quality Sega games included Choplifter, Shinobi, Cyborg Hunter, Thunder Blade, and Wonderboy 3.
I'm lucky I got to the Salvation Army when I did, as some other customer scouffed the 3 remaining (and non-so-exciting) Sega games. Had I arrived a few minutes later, I'm sure he would have taken the two games I got. So I'm not sure what I'll do with the games... probably hang onto them for now.
If you happend to stop by Firehouse Pizza, they have the arcade version of Outrun.
