Posted by Patrick on Sunday, January 02, 2005Rockland-ave.com has been around since 2002, and we began blogging regularly in September of 2003. We've been using the Blogger.com site to add posts to our own site because its free and easy to use. It's also comforting to know that if Blogger.com shut it's doors or started charging some crazy fee, we'd still have the web pages on the Rockland-Ave.com server with the posts intact. Once they're posted, they're ours to keep. They'd never just disapear, or be restricted in some way.
I like the Blogger.com system. It was very easy to set up on the site and requires little maintenance afterward. Adding posts to your site is much like sending an email. There's a box to type the message, a space for a subject line, the ability to add images, etc. There's even a spell-check, though I have a spotty history with that.
Blogger.com also has a built in commenting system. While this commenting system is nice, I saw a 3rd party commenting system that I thought was better. The people at Haloscan.com offered a commenting system inside a small pop-up window, that was easy for anyone to use. They placed a small advertisement in the window, so I assumed that was the exchange for the free-ness of it. I was wrong.
While writing the recent 2004 Annual Report, I noticed that posts from the past year that I was sure had comments for them, had no comments at all. After some searching at the haloscan.com site, I found that they remove comments after 4 months, unless you pay their 12 dollar a year extortion fee.
Since Rockland-Ave.com doesn't have hundreds of comments in a day, I decided against paying the 12 bucks. I guess I got what I paid for, but it was still kind of agrivating. I'm still able to see the old comments through the Haloscan site, but will have to manually copy and paste them one at a time back into Rockland-Ave.com.
So, I've switched on the Blogger.com commenting for the site. They work in a similar way, but there is no little pop-up window. It might also look like you have to sign up with Blogger.com if you want to post, but rest assured you do not. Just click on the Post Annonymously link to leave your message.
