Kelley Square

Posted by Patrick on Friday, May 07, 2004

Since the 290 reconstruction project began in Worcester, my commute has been altered in an unhappy way. I can either sit on 290, while 18-wheelers prevent me from merging, or I can take Kelley Square.

For those of you who don't know, Kelly Square is a sacred intersection in Worcester, Massachsuetts. There is no logic, or sense to be made of this place. Pavement disobeys the laws of physics. No lights, no laws, random islands placed in the middle. I think there must be 10 different streets converging onto one intersection. Everyone's got a stop sign, but you're a fool if you use one. You really have to cut everyone off to get where you need to go.

And don't you dare stop in middle, for even a second. Other cars will trap you in the middle, and you'll be stuck out there for days. No one will come to your aid.

So, in the morning and when I go home, I bravely drive through this Kelley Square. Years of aggressive driving on the Mass Pike have honed my instincts for this uncivilized form of automotive battle.
