One Large Crayon Bank and 5000 Pennies

Posted by Patrick on Sunday, March 18, 2007

Once upon a time when I was young, my parents got my sister and I each a large crayon shaped bank. I couldn't find a photo online, but it was large (maybe 3 1/2 feet tall?) and hollow plastic. As far as banks were concerned, it was pretty cool. Much more pleasant then the savings bank we have our mortgage with.

Anyhow, I reached a point where I started to put all my change in this large plastic crayon-shaped bank. Seemed like a good way to save some money. When I started working at the grocery store, I started needing more and more of the silver coins for things like lunch money and gas, so I made a firm rule in life to always save the pennies in the crayon shaped bank, but saving quarters, nickles and dimes was purely optional.

When Kate and I moved in together to Rockland Avenue, I had left the crayon bank (and a few other select items) at my parent's place. When the time came to move down here to North Carolina, we decieded to take just about everything from my parent's place down to here. The crayon bank was loaded into our truck with all our other worldly goods and we drove it on down.

Coincidentally the only item to break in transit was the crayon shaped bank. The bottom of the truck was littered with coins. I found a canvas bag and swept them in.

penny rolls

Well, in an effort to make it the most exciting Saturday night ever, we rolled all 5000 pennies last night. (Kate had rolled the not-nearly-as-many non-penny coins earlier in the week). We worked as a team, counting and filling the paper rolls for hours, finally finishing after midnight. Nice to have it done, and nice to have some cash, although really for five thousand pennies, you'd think we'd get more then fifty bucks.
