On Being a Grown-up
Posted by Patrick on Thursday, March 01, 2007Kate and I were cruising on foot down our street enjoying the warm weather before the rain came in, when a group of elementary school kids riding bikes and sporting Heelys started following us. Where do you live? they asked. We chatted with them and they kept following us.
One of them said, as we walked further away from their house, It's ok that we're following you because you're grown-ups. Man does that make me feel old. Not that marriage, buying a house, holding down a job, and other responsible decisions don't already make me grown up, but when little kids call it to your face, you know you've arrived.
We ran into the kids on the walk back and they were very, very, very chatty. All talking at the same time. Talking about different things. We discerned that there were brothers and sisters and cousins in the mix. We learned about Heely technique and trick performance. One was astonished as to how old we were when we told him, and was quite sure that we would get even taller as we age. It was a positive neighborly experience.
One thing about being a grown-up is that, I'm pretty sure, I could never buy Heelys for myself despite how awesome I think they are.
