The Midas Jab

Posted by Patrick on Saturday, August 14, 2004

Last year I went and had my oil changed at Midas in Woonsocket, as I had done in the past. Yes, I know I can do it myself, but it's difficult to do when you live in an apartment. I'd go down the street to the local oil changery, but the kids at Jiffy Lube are incompetent. (They nearly caused engine death with Kate's car, so none of that lube for us). So anyway, Midas seemed to be doing an ok job until they forgot to put my oil cap back on after an oil change. You know, the part the keeps the oil of out the engine bay? Yes you know it.

Oil cap'

So, back then I had vowed that I wouldn't go back, after my complaint to their corporate office was brushed off, and no offer of a refund was made after I contacted the Midas in question.

But... my engine suffered no damage from the incident, so I decided after a year it was ok to take it back to Midas. You can't hold these grudges forever you know. It's not like they could do something like that twice on one car, right? Right?

So I got back for an oil change like 3 months ago, and I think I'm good to go. I thought all could be forgiven.

Then I go back there today for the next change and the guy comes out and says "I don't know who changed your oil last time, but they didn't put the drain plug in more than half a turn. It could have come out at any time."

I wanted to scream... but I also didn't want to distract this guy from possibly forgetting to put oil back in the car, or worse putting the old oil back in. No, wait, no oil would be worse than old oil.

So I left, now for sure never to go back. To mark the words of our great president:

"There's an old saying in Tennessee—I know it's in Texas, probably in Tennessee—that says, fool me once, shame on --— shame on you. Fool me—you can't get fooled again." —Nashville, Tenn., Sept. 17, 2002

He's not really great. Neither is Midas.
