Does whatever a Spider can

Posted by Patrick on Wednesday, July 21, 2004

Meant to write about this a while ago. Kate and I saw Spiderman 2 the other week. It was good. Wicked good! Good enough to see again with Pete and Shawn and Kate at the drive-in. Probably the best movie I've seen this year. Much much better than the first one, with a much better villan.

I liked part one, but I thought the whole Green Goblin thing was just kind of silly. I mean, who puts on a plasticy green mask just throw grenades around? Not that it's any more beliveable than a scientist who fuses robot arms to his brain...

Spidey and Oct

I like Peter Parker's struggles with day-to-day life. He's got groovey powers and smarts, but can't seem to hold down a job and social relationships at the same time. I also like director Sam Raimi's style.

Two scenes stuck out to me. In one, Peter decides it's time for a change of career, pushing aside his Spidey powers. He starts to do better in school, talk to people, and it almost feels like the opening to Mary Tyler Moore.

Peter and MJ

Another well-filmed scene has Spiderman and Dr. Octopus fighting on a train. At one point, Spiderman ends up vulnerable with his arms spread out, at the very front of the train. The passengers end up carring him over their heads to safety. The Spiderman-Christ connection is kinda cool.

No noticeable product placement, lots of cool special effects (looking more refined than the last Spiderman), and the very end is cool too. You should check it out if you haven't already, and this movie is theatre-worthy. If there was a coveted Rockland-ave.com Seal of Movie Goodness, this movie would earn it.

Spidey!
